Cerasa, Sicily - 6ha. under vine - Biodynamic viticulture

Francesco Guccione farms 6 hectares in the hills of Piana degli Albanesi, in western Sicily, where the vineyards sit at altitude and are planted to native varieties including Nero d’Avola, Perricone, Trebbiano and Catarratto. His approach is deeply intuitive: each vintage is treated as an experiment, with Francesco constantly searching for new ways to reveal the character of the varieties and the place they come from. In the cellar, this means minimal intervention, natural fermentation and very little sulphur, with wines given time to develop. Most ageing is done in stainless steel but there are some barrels whcih are used when appropriate. Francesco is perhaps best known for producing wines of remarkable clarity, energy and individuality, rooted firmly in the landscape of Sicily. And, somewhat wonderfully, he is known to sing ariettas to his wines as they mature in the cellar.
