Pietranico. Abruzzo - 3.5ha. under vine - Organic viticulture
Pietranico rises up on the slopes of the Gran Sasso mountain, close to the Adriatic Sea and between two national parks. Here, at 400 metres above sea level, we find Luca and Alfonso. Luca was inspired to work with wine after spending a vintage with fellow Winemakers Club producer Francesco Guccione in Sicily. He partnered with Alfonso, who has been farming in the region for many years and brings with him a great knowledge of the terroir, local varieties and regional wine styles. The project was started from scratch, sourcing a large portion of their vines from cuttings taken from Emidio Pepe’s old vineyards. Trebbiano and Montepulciano were planted initially with Pecorino following more recently. In and around the vineyards, they also have olive groves, ancient grains and apiaries, aiming to maintain a balance of biodiversity while producing their own pasta and honey. 2020 and 2021 saw the construction of a new winery for Luca and Alfonso. As a result, there is now room for a few tonneaux, with concrete tanks planned for the future.
