Grape: Nerello Mascalese
Country: Italy
Region: Etna, Sicily
Farming: Organic
Calabretta are known for their patience, utilising long macerations and long ageing before release. There is energy here, concentrated fruit and aromatics that are tangled with flavours of earth, rock and smoke from the Volcano.
Nerello Mascalese is the key red variety on Etna, it has the fruit and elegance of Pinot Noir but more structured and savoury like Nebbiolo. Piede Franco means “own foot”, referring to ungrafted vines, and in this case they’re over 80 years old, rooted deeply into the mountain’s black ash soils.
