Grape: Cabernet Franc
Country: France
Region: Loire
Farming: Organic
A beautiful example of this grapes ageability. Dark tones, a touch of graphite, some earthy spice but vibrancy on the pallate. This has the best of both worlds right now but will continue to age gracefully for a while. "Franc de Pied" refers to ungrafted vines, a rarity in modern Europe following the phylloxera crisis of the late 19th century. Here, Thierry Germain farms a small parcel of Cabernet Franc planted in deep sands, one of the few environments where vines can survive on their own roots. The result is a wine that many consider among the clearest expressions of the variety.
Saumur-Champigny is often associated with Cabernet Franc of savoury depth and earthy complexity. This takes a more delicate path. A fascinating bottling from one of the Loire's most influential growers.
